Beinn Cottage

Beinn Cottage, which sleeps four in two bedrooms, offers everything you could want from a holiday in the Scottish Highlands.

Built at the turn of the twentieth century on Alvie Estate, the recent renovation of Beinn Cottage has seen many of the original features restored to brilliant effect, though it is now a significantly brighter and more comfortable home than it would have been for the original occupants. Exposed rafters, antique hardware, reclaimed wooden doors and banisters, and thick exterior walls combine to create a feeling of solidity and enduring quality. These are perfectly balanced by thoughtful interior design decisions and a soft colour palette that spreads across wallpaper, paint and luxury textiles, reflecting the variety of the surrounding Highland countryside.

Kitchen and living

As you enter the cottage, you swing left for the dining room and adjoining kitchen. The newly added skylight bathes the kitchen in natural light, so being chief cook while you’re here definitely won’t feel like a chore. You can pop out into the rear courtyard via the back door, or turn on your heel and pass back through the entrance hall to the lounge: a How-To for comfort and relaxation.

Bedrooms and bathroom

Upstairs is a stylish bathroom and two tranquil bedrooms full of practical yet beautiful furnishings, all with panoramic views over the Cairngorms. The artwork and prints dotted around the cottage are by British artists inspired by the beauty of this part of the world, and the collection of family books includes some that date back to the 19th century.

Outdoors

As welcoming as Beinn Cottage is, it won’t be long before the outdoors beckons. From the garden, you can enjoy 360° views over the Cairngorms, Alvie Estate and the Monadhliath Mountains to the rear. There’s a wood-fired hot tub for evening star-gazing, chairs to lounge on, a barbecue for sunny days, and secure storage for outdoor equipment. When this cottage was built, Alvie Estate was on its way to becoming one of the best places in Scotland for red deer. To this day, it’s not unusual to spot one – or osprey, red squirrels and much more – from the garden. All you have to do is wait.

Location

Despite being in the midst of all this nature, Beinn Cottage is very well connected. You can be in Aviemore in less than ten minutes, and Cairngorm Mountain, Loch Morlich and the Highland Wildlife Park aren’t much further. Don’t forget to take advantage of all Alvie Estate has to offer, either: you could spend an entire week doing something different every day and still not have exhausted all the options. From zip wires and clay pigeon shooting to archery, horse riding, and fishing, the hardest part will be choosing what to do first.
