About West Lodge

Cottages don’t come any more characterful than the historic holiday lodge; West Lodge. This delightful bolthole for two is just moments from the shore of Loch Insh near Kincraig, 5 miles south of Aviemore. From its crow-step gables to its arched doorways – and even a heraldic Clan McPherson cat carved in stone by the entrance – West Lodge will charm you from the minute you arrive!

Originally the gatehouse to the Dunachton Estate, this B-listed treasure built in 1860, has been refurbished and refitted with lots of comfortable contemporary features – all perfectly proportioned for a relaxing stay for two. It also enjoys stunning views of the Cairngorm Mountain range from the living room and bedroom.

Living and dining

The living room has a cosy wood burner, keeping the lodge toasty even in the snowiest winters. There is a sleek and contemporary kitchen with a lovely big butlers sink, oven, fridge and washing machine. The separate dining room next door in fact seats four – should you decide to invite anyone else for a meal during your stay.

Bedroom and bathroom

The bedroom is light and airy and has a kingsize bed, and your bathroom has a walk-in shower.

Outdoors

When the weather is warm and you’d like to enjoy an al fresco lunch or a romantic dinner under the stars, there’s a barbecue and outdoor eating area on the decking. Water babies are really spoiled for choice at West Lodge because there is a luxurious outdoor hot tub for two!

Location

Should you prefer a bracing dip, Loch Insh is within dashing distance of the front door – just cross the road at the front of the house and under the railway bridge and you’re there!  If you fancy trying to catch your own supper, why not speak to us about arranging fishing on the loch? With so many outdoor activities to enjoy, you’ll be pleased to know that you can securely store your bikes, fishing equipment or skis in the stone shed in the garden. The garden is secure and fenced all the way around so perfect if you decide to bring your dog too.

You can walk around the shore of the loch to Kincraig village, a little Highland gem with the wonderful cafe, The Old Post Office serving fabulous cream cakes and exquisite Italian food. You can also head further around the loch to reach the Loch Insh watersports centre and restaurant.

West Lodge is the perfect historic holiday lodge and romantic retreat for two.

We had a wonderful stay at West Lodge, thank you. We had everything we needed there for a memorable holiday, and especially loved the hot tub and garden for our dog. The bed was very comfy, the kitchen well equipped. The weather was so hot, we didn't need the fire but appreciated the many logs in case we did. The cottage is in a perfect position for exploring The Cairngorms, Rothiemurchus, lochs to swim, Ospreys at Boat of Garten, Distilleries to visit, walks around Kingussie as well as Glen Feshie - all of which we did, and more. However, a special memory has to be witnessing an osprey fishing in the loch opposite the cottage - too fast for a pic unfortunately but a magical moment. Many thanks for your communications and keeping in touch with us, as well as your welcome at the cottage.

We had a wonderful stay at West Lodge. The little goodies left for us were lovely and the house was equipped with everything we needed. We loved sitting in the hot tub every evening star gazing. We'd love to return in the future.
