About The Old Smithy

Stay in a little piece of history in this charming two-bedroomed cottage, which sits elevated on the banks of the River Nethy. Originally built in 1806, the property once served as a blacksmith’s cottage, but recent renovations have since delicately melded modern luxury with the property’s unique period features.

Kitchen and living

Rustle up a meal in the open-plan kitchen/diner, which centres around the original magnificent stone fireplace. Admire the flames from the elegant Nordic-style dining table, or snuggle up with a book or dram (or both!) on the nearby loveseat. The dining area leads onto a newly built living area, equipped with a TV and PlayStation. Beyond lounging, floor-to-ceiling doors and windows make this bright space a twitcher’s paradise or a yogi’s new favourite flow spot. Come warmer weather, effortlessly transition outside via sliding doors leading to the patio.

Bedrooms and bathrooms

This cosy lodge includes two bedrooms and their ensuites. There’s also a family-sized bathroom: retreat to its bathtub after a long day in the hills, safe in the knowledge that nobody will come knocking. For those seeking extra moments of solitude, the king-sized bedroom has its own TV and DVD player, while the double offers garden views from its patio doors.

Outdoors

The enclosed lawned garden (south-facing) is perfect for children and dogs. You’ll find a 150-year- old oak tree, as well as the large stones once used as grafting stations by the blacksmith. Wooden steps lead you down to a riverside seating area; a haven for informal fishing, bird- and nature- watching, or simply summertime evening relaxation.

Location

On a quiet street, just a short walk from the centre of beautiful Nethy Bridge, The Smithy makes an excellent base for exploring the Cairngorms National Park. Take your pick from the area’s incredible walk/bike/swim and run spots, restaurants, cafes, activities, and so much more.

August 2026
Once again we very much enjoyed our 2 weeks in The Old Smithy. Having been a number of times over the years it’s very comforting to arrive and find things much as usual. It suits us perfectly and we were very happy with everything. Usual activities for us include walking, cycling, golfing and a bit of open-water swimming. It’s all there on the doorstep in beautiful surroundings and lovely to return to the cosy cottage. Nothing much else to add. Hope to be back!

Beautiful cottage with amazing surroundings. A very comfortable stay in an extremely modern setting. The cottage provided everything required for a very comfortable stay, thank you so much for our little starter kit, this was such a nice touch and greatly appreciated. The sitting area was amazing and once the birds got used to the feeders we put up, we were inundated with siskins, coal tits, young blue and great tits and green finch with an abundance of chaffinch. Please feed the birds you won’t regret it. An amazing stay with lots of wildlife in and around. Please do the Nethy Bridge river walk in the evening, especially if you like bats, such a super sight to see. Thank you for an amazing holiday, the Old Smithy certainly lived up to its pictures and descriptions, looking forward to returning in the near future.

We had another fabulous stay in Old Smithy and very peaceful at this time of year. Plenty walking, eating and drinking also managed to read several books. Already looking forward to another week in April and 2 weeks in August next door. Say thanks to Katie for sorting out extending extra days. Hope you're all keeping busy as usual. Cannot see past Seasgair now.
