The beaches of the Scottish Highlands can hold their own against the best worldwide. And we have a real gem to share with you, in the little fishing village of Portmahomack. Portmahomack’s unique west-facing position on the Tarbart peninsula provides spectacular sunsets and calm waters that are ideal for swimming and paddleboarding. Just a few metres from the sandy beach and rock pools lies Ina’s Cottage, which has everything you need to make the most of the beachfront location: a decked area complete with hot tub, outdoor shower, sun loungers and seating. Watch the sun go down over the Sutherland mountains while planning your next day’s adventure.

Ina’s Cottage is a traditional stone building that has been meticulously renovated to blend with the environment and cater to the needs of the modern-day holidaymaker.

Kitchen and living

Stepping through the front door, you arrive in a bright conservatory. Its generous corner sofa is the perfect place for a morning coffee while you watch for dolphins dancing in the estuary. Onwards to the heart of the home, the kitchen diner, where you might feel inspired to cook some local seafood. Leisure craft are common these days in Portmahomack, but a small number of fishing boats do remain. Across the hall is a beach-vibey living room with a woodburner and carefully selected furnishings, plus a games room with something for everyone – a bar, pool table and darts board. A bathroom and practical utility room complete the ground floor.

Bedrooms and bathroom

The main staircase (yes, there are two) brings you to the main bedroom and its ensuite shower room, and another bedroom; this can be a super-king or twin. The family bathroom is up here as well. Climbing the rear staircase reveals a sunlight-drenched, spacious twin bedroom. Inside and out, Ina’s Cottage has everything you could wish for from a seaside escape.

Location

Portmahomack has a village shop, a 9-hole golf course, a cafe and an Italian restaurant, all within walking distance of the cottage. There are plenty of coastal walking opportunities, and a local favourite is the hike along the shore to reach Tarbat Ness lighthouse. Kids will love ‘rock climbing’ here.

Portmahomack is the perfect base from which to explore the North Coast 500 and the wider Highlands. A short drive takes you to several other wonderful local beaches, eateries and activities, and we recommend making time for a trip around the estuary to Dornoch, a lovely cathedral town.
