The Glenturret Distillery

A Visit to The Glenturret: Scotland’s Oldest Distillery and Newest Michelin Star.

The Glenturret Distillery holds two impressive titles. It is Scotland’s oldest working distillery and home to the country’s newest Michelin‑star restaurant. Both sit under one roof, creating a unique destination in Perthshire.

A Glimpse Into History

Toni, our Project Manager at Seasgair, joined a one‑hour tour of the distillery. The site was once known as The Famous Grouse Experience before the Lalique Group acquired it in 2019.
Founded in 1763, Glenturret still uses traditional methods. There is no computerisation, and the team takes pride in doing things the old‑fashioned way.

Perthshire: Scotland’s Larder

Perthshire is famous for its rich farmland, local producers and vibrant food scene. The distillery reflects this heritage. It works closely with local farmers and buys barley through regional contracts.

Stories, Characters and Local Legends

A display cabinet showcases photos of well‑known visitors. Gerard Butler, Ewan McGregor and Andy Murray all feature. So do several distillery cats and even an employee from the 1800s. Each has a direct link to Glenturret and their own cask of whisky.

A Tour Full of Craft and Character

The tour blends science, storytelling and humour. The Guide explained each stage of whisky production with real skill.
One highlight was the origin of the word “barmy”. It comes from workers absorbing too much CO₂ while handling barm, the froth from fermented yeast.

Tasting Time

The group needed no encouragement when the tasting began. Triple wood, peat‑smoked and limited‑edition whiskies were all popular.
Toni was driving, so the team packaged her samples. She enjoyed them later at home.
For many years, Glenturret whisky went into blended malts. Only recently has it been bottled under its own name in striking Lalique glass.

A Highly Recommended Experience

Toni recommends the tour as a brilliant way to spend an hour. You learn about local heritage, whisky craft and the spirit of Perthshire.

A New Michelin Star for Perthshire

The restaurant recently earned its first Michelin star under Chef Mark Donald. This award secures Glenturret’s place on the Perthshire foodie map.
